My name is Katakis from MobyGames, and I enjoyed doing reviews for both modern and retro games, but not as much as I enjoyed doing walkthroughs. I could format them the way I wanted to before submission (have bold and italic text, and even blockquotes). Then, the site was ruined by GameFly and most of the approvers/contributors left the site.

Can you allow contributors to your site to submit walkthroughs, the way they did on MobyGames?

For the game types, there currently are base games, compilations and add-ons, right? Would you consider adding Limited Editions as another category? Of course they can always be part of the main game, but they often have a "Collector's Edition" or similar subtitle, and sometimes bonuses akin to add-ons...

Yeah, I know that feeling. It just gets more enthusiastic with time spent here. :D Another strange feeling I've had with Oregami was that we are working hard to make ourselves superfluous in the end. 8)

Another MobyGames alumni. A warm welcome to you! :)

Hints/Tips/Cheats/Walkthroughs shall be part of Oregami in the future. But I have to admit, that it's rather low a priority as we will have to tackle the more important things first. On a side note, could you give a link to a walkthrough in the MobyWay? I never cared much for these contributions there.
Ultyzarus wrote:For the game types, there currently are base games, compilations and add-ons, right?
Basically, this is true, yes.
Ultyzarus wrote:Would you consider adding Limited Editions as another category?
A usual "Limited Edition" is technically just another release of a game. But, if this edition contains an enhanced re-release (or even a remake), that could qualify for a new release group, but all these releases and release groups will still live under one single game entry.

Somehow, I feel the need to write an English introduction to our data model. :) Will do, but please give me some time.

BTW, if you want to discuss an issue in detail, feel free to open a new thread for it in this board.

Hi MZ,

I appreciate you focusing on your priorities first, and I am prepared to wait for the Walkthroughs section. But eventually, when this section comes to fruition, expect a big flood of them coming from me

Here are two MobyWalkthroughs that I submitted earlier.

http://www.mobygames.com/game/kings-que ... tId,17198/
http://www.mobygames.com/game/kings-que ... ntId,6048/

The first one is just plain text, save for the name of the walkthrough at the top. The seconds contain formatting codes that insert bold text and blockquotes.

Just wanted to stop by and voice my support for this project. I've been involved in game preservation for many years, but have so far stayed away from contributing to cataloging projects.

The biggest drawback for me with other cataloging projects has been that your submitted data becomes solely their data. What's the point of submitting data, screenshots, scans, descriptions, etc. to a site and then not being able to share that material anywhere else? Eventually no matter how large, popular, or essential that site is it's probably going to disappear someday (MobyGames?). The fact that Oregami is being built on a model where everything is still "open" for everyone to continue using, sharing, and building upon is a huge improvement.

I only hope this project really happens. According to the news entries it looks like this was an idea in 2010, and official planning/development began in 2011. Two years later and it still just appears to be an ambitious idea and some unfinished code

You know what? I've absolutely no problem with that. :D

Interesting. Would you like to share what "design features" you'd need for submitting visually appealing hints / cheats / walkthroughs? I'd say that you need at least:
1) Placing pictures and / or linking to screen shots
2) Bold / italic text
3) Quoting

What else?

Welcome and thank you for the encouragement! :) Interesting people showing up here, your project demu.org seems like a cool bookmark to me.
Swizzle wrote:The biggest drawback for me with other cataloging projects has been that your submitted data becomes solely their data.
That's exactly my biggest gripe which we will finally adress with Oregami's structure. Submitting data to Oregami will make them everyone's, and even if the data would become our's, this "our's" would still mean Oregami's base association which is a legal representation of the games community anyway, with its assets bound to its purpose of documenting and preserving games and hardware.

On a side note, one of the most common misunderstandings about Oregami is that it aims to swallow every gaming project out there. Wrong. IMHO, demu.org is a prime example of a project that could be significantly enhanced by using Oregami data via our API. And I would be glad, if we could enrich the gaming sites out there with people using what they can't deliver themselves, and putting their own content on top.

A project like Oregami is a high mountain to climb, especially in spare time, so we do it in the only way possible: step by step. Be assured that we were working on it all this time, and went through much of the technical, legal, and organisational groundwork, so we now can focus on setting up the association and doing the coding.

One day, there will be a place where we can all agree to work on, and we strongly believe its URL will be oregami.org. :)

4) Anchor Links. If a game is quite long but it is split up into days/chapters, maybe the walkthrough can have different sections for them. Then users can click on a link at the top of the walkthrough to jump to that section.
5) Supplementary page that contains a point list/object list/maps.
6) Screenshots/supplementaries should be optional.

Hi everyone,

Another mobygames refugee here. This project seems very promising, especially the CC licence, after what happened to MG with GF...

Some stuff I would like to see implemented in this project would be a more organized titling system than MG. At MG English is the main title and others are a bunch of loose and separated 'alternate titles'. A system where you can enter multiple titles and then select "English Title", "French Title", "Japanese Title" for each title from a drop down list or something would be far more efficient and can make searching for a localized title more easy. With little flags next to them if possible :D . For the non-alphabet languages (Japanese, Chinese, Korean,...) a subfield should be available too for the romanized title. This way the non-alphabet title and it's romanization are always connected. If the data is available a contributor should be able to select the original release title from that list as well, instead of English 1st like MG.

Linking to trailers, gameplay videos, video game music, walktroughs,... would be very nice too. Even if this project's website also has them, direct linking to other sites is always handy.

That's a great idea. I also thought that would be a better way to deal with the titles (and not be stuck with Final Fantasy II for all FF4 games...)

Indra from MG also made a list of what he would want for a database, like Kevin, he would like game trailers there.

Here is Indra's list:

1. A complete dictatorship given to me to create game groups or categories as I see fit, subject to democratic vote.

2. A forum where the people have a sense of humor, where I can troll perverse ideas and be racist towards Europeans.

3. A similar MG points system at most; at least a track record that indicates what I have contributed, divided into categories.

4. The ability to include practically anything about the game, if it turns into a mini wiki of sorts, then so be it.

5. A title system where the country of origin gets precedence.

6. All information presented (at least the technical ones) have a source which is publicly presented.

7. Source material, such as credit screenshots, are documented and publicly viewable.

8. Stupid lame profile achievements, which may optionally be attached to your avatar/signature/whatever. Just to piss off the people who hate achievements.

9. Html tags that work and have a helpful button so you don't have to keep typing the dang code every time when editing stuff.

10. Ability to document unreleased and/or cancelled games. Personally, I'm not interested in it, but other users have shown interest in it.

11. A more accurate genre system that does not subjugate itself to marketing or fanboi trends.

12. A way to document game trailers. Really.

13. Cooperation with other gaming websites.

Just have a look around and share your experiences where you like.
I guess the number of English discussions might increase in the next weeks...

I used to be an approver at MobyGames too, but I quit after getting sick of the management's mismanagements, then left the forum after the GameFly buyout, then thanked GameFly for murdering MobyGames a few days ago. Yay drama.

I'm happy to help, just saying. :P

Noted, thanks. :) This seems a blueprint for other feature articles, too.

A warm welcome to you, too, Kevin. :) The licensing is core for us to prevent such s..t from happening again.

This is already implemented into the data model, as I always disliked this on MG, too. 8)

A links section for each game is always a good idea and needs to be implemented, but even better would be to host our own FTP server for demos / patches, and our own video server. But for that, Oregami needs to grow a little beforehand. ;)
Ultyzarus wrote:Indra from MG also made a list of what he would want for a database, like Kevin, he would like game trailers there.
WOW, I think we should discuss this list in a separate thread. Would you mind opening one?

If this influx of MG people continues there's a real threat of a new "Game Jorunal" thread here. ;)

Very encouraging to read, from all of the new people here. Be prepared for us finding a way how you can help.
